What is Trabeculectomy?

Updated: Jun 17

Trabeculectomy is a procedure where the fluid inside the eye, exits from a new outflow channel created surgically.

The reduction of pressure inside the eye is important. Achieved either by means of medicines or surgery, when medicines fail or are contra-indicated.

The aim of trabeculectomy is to control the intraocular pressure, tailored to each patient; which in turn aids in maintaining vision.

When the normal outflow channel does not filter fluid inside the eye adequately, a new outflow channel is created surgically. The position of this new conduit is decided by the physician. It generally takes around 4-6 weeks for the eye to heal.
